Black History: Bespoke Couture

When we speak of Black History we usually only seek to those born in the U.S. but of course I'm in love with British culture so it makes perfect sense I would feature legendary Savile Row designer Ozwald Boateng. At the age of 28 Ozwald became the youngest and first black tailor to open a store on Savile Row in London. For those that don't know, Savile Row (which I had the pleasure of visiting) is a legendary street in known for bespoke tailoring which birth-placed the first custom suit.

Ozwald is known for suiting big names such as Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx, Will Smith, P. Diddy and many more. His superior cutting style creates an illusion of a slimmer fit. Apart from having his own line he also served as the Creative Director of Givenchy from 2004 to 2007. To add to his legacy in 2006 he was awarded an OBE from the Queen for "An Outstanding Contribution To The Clothing Industry". Ahead of his time in 2006, he also released a reality TV series in America by the name of "House of Boateng" which honestly would have had much more success in today's day because reality tv is at an all time high.

His movie "A Man's Story" which he filmed over 12 years of his life is a must see! Boateng goes down as the Father of Bespoke Couture. Watch the trailer of his movie "A Man's Story" below which can be watched in full on Netflix.
